-- DECOMISSIONED 2009_05_12

May 12th, 2009, the Donkey Server was shut down. No, we didn't crumble under threats of the RIAA or MPAA. On the contrary, 3 letters in the course of a year is actually quite 'mild', and makes for good hamster cage lining. That said, you have to understand the way Donkey Servers work in order to understand why the decision was made to abandon this one. Basically, a user can log into any Donkey Server, and then if their searched file is not found, that Donkey Server will branch out and search across many other Donkey Servers until it finds the file in question (or a timeout occurs).

Simple enough... but, for a while now, and more-so recently, offshore Donkey Servers have avoided (and are now just plain blocking) Donkey Servers with IP addresses inside the United States. Why? The RIAA and MPAA have setup fake Donkey Servers in the US to intercept and then both log the proclaimed 'offending' offshore Donkey Servers and serve back a fake file or a virus.

SpinelliCreations sits on a US registered IP address. While we could funnel the Donkey Server traffic through our friend in Asia, it was decided not to. A lot of work has gone toward conforming to this holier-than-though standard of 'legitimacy', and going back to an offshore traffic funnel would contradict all of that. In addition, there isn't enough bandwidth to do it. It would cripple our friend's internet connection.

So, the Donkey is dead. But it's not that big of a deal, the entire Donkey Network, in spite of the efforts of a lot of people, is crumbling (well, just admit it, it's already crumbled).

There is an effort in the works to launch a Bit-Torrent Server. However, a lot needs to be decided; primarily, whether or not ThePirateBay is a suitable tracker, or if we should go with our own tracker. The issue with TPB is that, while it is the largest and most well known tracker out there -- making it the most logical choice for distribution -- it is also riddled daily with new lawsuits demanding it be shut down, which would cast an undesireable shadow upon SpinelliCreations.

Pentiumslayer 1's eDonkey Network...

eMule Logo Having been a fan and user of the eDonkey Network for many years, it's hard not to notice both the value and necessity of the system. Along with Bittorrent, eDonkey is among the top methods for posting and retrieving copies of such things as the operating system upon which this server runs! Yes, Linux, BSD, SunOS, and all of the wonderful free and open software that goes along with them -- and it's a lot of software -- is regularly transmitted in heaping table-spoon-fulls across the eDonkey Network. Many people who use eDonkey don't even know they're on it! If you utilize Shareaza, Ares, eMule, lMule, aMule, Gnutella 1 / 2, eDonkey2000, xMule, hydranode, Jubster, Lphant, MLDonkey, Morpheus, MediaVamp, Pruna, FlashGet, or others... then guess what? You're an eDonkey Network user.

Because this network is so important to the survival of free and open software, the GNU, upstart Indie music and movie artists, and a generally informed society, SpinelliCreations has decided to build, maintain, and host an eDonkey Network Server, utilizing the freely developed Lugdunum eServer.

The Network's Welcome Message

Note: The following message greets all users who log into the network via SpinelliCreations. Should SpinelliCreations find a user to be (or be given proof of such by a third party) in violation of the following, said user's internet protocol (IP) address will be locked out indefinately. Thus, SpinelliCreations is able to operate a fair and legal eDonkey Network Server, having a clear and distinct Terms of Use / Copyright Policy, and a clear and distinct penalty for violation of such.

Our Explicit and Clear Terms of Use -- Read NOW -- Use of this Donkey Server is subject to the Terms of Use of SpinelliCreations.com, which are available at http://spinellicreations.com/notice/copyright.shtml However, since no files are actually hosted by SpinelliCreations, the policy should be interpreted such that...
"No user shall utilize the SpinelliCreations Server Project to knowingly share, search for, trade, disseminate, or otherwise abuse copyrighted/trademarked/licensed material" (without the expressed written permission of the material's owner, provided the user is not the owner).

Basically, if it's not your own material, and it's not free/open-to-the-public, then you are in violation of this server's Copyright Policiy/Terms of Use. Users who do not or cannot accept the Copyright Policy/Terms of Use must immediately disconnect from the Server.

SpinelliCreations accepts NO RESPONSIBILITY for the actions of any user. The intent of this Donkey Server is to support the free and open communication of ideas, free and open source computer programs, Indie (independant) music, and the advancement of the Linux server and desktop community.

Where to Connect

It is very easy to connect to the SC PS1 eDonkey Server. Simply select "SpinelliCreations" from your client's server selection list, or (if we do not yet show up on your list) manually add us using the following information.

IP = 72.88.94.11
PORT = 4116

How to Connect

There are many eDonkey Network clients available, but SpinelliCreations recommends the following:

For Linux / Unix / BSD users:

PRIMARY... aMule ... a fork of the lMule project (which was a fork of eMule), this cross-platform program is Open Source (simply download, compile, and run -- or download a Binary for popular *nix flavors), constantly under development, and currently shares some code with the venerable eMule.

OTHER ... lMule ... a very crude but effective fork of eMule for Linux only.
OTHER ... xMule ... the X11 Mule.

For Windows users:

PRIMARY ... eMule ... by far the easiest, most highly configurable, and best Win32 client, compatible with Win64 systems.

OTHER ... Shareaza ... a Sourceforge project that connects to multiple networks.

For Mac(intosh) users:

PRIMARY... aMule ... binaries exist for OSX Panther and Tiger, as well as source.

Note:

If you are behind a firewall, router, or switch, make sure you free up your TCP and UDP connection ports in your firewall or router's configuration. The defaults are 4662 (TCP) and 4665 (UDP). However, you are encouraged to change these to whatever you like. For example, the eServer outgoing default port is 4661, however SpinelliCreations runs on 4116, as homage to all those who suffer in internet exile behind ISP's who perform port blocking. (SpinelliCreations would like to note the Verizon Online Services does not block any ports on our static line, and we commend them for it).

Be a Part of the Solution

You can be a part of the solution, instead of the problem. If you've got a static IP address, a small amount of bandwith to sacrifice, and a Pentium III / AMD Athlon (generation 1) or better machine, you too can run an eDonkey Network Server.

See the Lugdunum homepage at http://lugdunum2k.free.fr/kiten.html for a free download of a binary package for just about any operating system, including SunOS, BSD, Linux, Windows, and Mac.

The Lugdunum Server incorporates various properties, allowing it to be anything from an open road to a discretely filtered channel. Should the day ever come when a reasonable and equitable set of rules can be applied to such a network, implementing such would be quite easy.
